David Estrada is a veteran Silicon Valley lawyer and his career spans various key roles in technology startups and established brands like Google, YouTube, and Lyft. In 2014, during the nascent days of the rideshare industry at Lyft, Estrada played a pivotal role in building the government relations team and contributed to the development of state laws for the industry, particularly in the face of challenges from taxi interests. Previously, at Google X, he played a key role in shaping the first state-level autonomous vehicle regulations in Nevada, Florida, and California. His early advocacy for self-driving cars and supportive policies were underscored by his participation in the Computer History Museum event, Reinventing Law, in 2013.
In 2019, Estrada joined Nuro as the Chief Legal and Policy Officer, where he emphasized the unique requirements of autonomous vehicles used for goods delivery, asserting that they do not need traditional equipment like steering wheels or seat belts. Additionally, he collaborated with Sebastian Thrun to establish the Kitty Hawk Corporation, a flying car company, which launched the one-person VTOL aircraft called the Flyer. Estrada also sat on the board of directors of Wisk, a joint venture of Kitty Hawk and Boeing.
Estrada’s diverse career also includes significant contributions to the early success of YouTube, where he was the second attorney, having joined in 2006 before its acquisition by Google. He collaborated with Apple to include YouTube as the only non-Apple application on the original launch of the iPhone.
